He Has Overcome The World

By Regina Marcazzo-Skarka

Do you ever get frazzled about little things and remain calm about more significant issues or vice versa? Could the same situation on a different day bring the opposite effect? What does it depend on – your agenda for the day, the start of your morning, the state of your emotions, and how much time you have spent with the Lord?

While Jesus was talking to His disciples shortly before he was to be arrested and crucified, He warned them that they would not see Him for a little while and would mourn and encounter trouble. However, He also lets them know that their problems will not last forever and their future will include rejoicing and peace. The disciples forgot quickly and scattered when Jesus was arrested, and Peter, as predicted by Jesus, denied Him three times.

Though sinless and perfect, our Savior Jesus Christ died carrying our sins, big and small, to the cross, allowing those who believe in Him to have the assurance of eternal life in heaven. He paid the penalty for our past, present, and future sins and gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us through our life here on earth. Therefore, we are called to trust and share Him with others while looking to Him, not the world. However, sometimes life is hard, and we lose sight of the reality that Jesus is just a prayer away and that the Holy Spirit lives in us.

Jesus reminded the disciples in John 16:33 that there was no need for fear or worry. He said, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” As followers of Jesus, those words are for us as well.

Of course, we can quickly get wrapped up in the moment and momentarily lose sight of our tremendous and undeserved gift of salvation.

The disciples came around after they saw the resurrected Christ. They went on to live their lives for Him, with almost all joyfully suffering persecution. No one enjoys hardship, but some habits can help us through:

– Ask the Holy Spirit to fill and guide you.

– Spend time in prayer throughout the day.

– Read God’s word, the Bible, and our guidebook for life.

– Take a deep breath and “be still.”

– Memorize go-to scripture that will help you regain your peace in the situation.

– Remember where we will spend eternity and that Jesus conquered death.
